Hmm, I re-read this yet again and am going to reverse
my objection to the handle/variable distinction even though
it might be a bit misleading. The "handle" is the result of
an expression (not necessarily a variable).
The subclass issue is still a problem.
So maybe something like:
However, the $cast function may be used to assign a superclass
handle to a subclass variable if the superclass handle refers to an
object handle where the actual object type is assignment compatible
with the subclass variable.
