Thank you for re-explaining my idea so clearly. My thoughts about
the modport name are that it does not form part of the signature for
compatibility purposes. However any change of name must be explicit,
e.g. given in the port connection list.

I am also happy with your proposal to allow modports to stand alone
in a package. The reason for my proposal is that I think it needs
less re-work and therefore has a better chance of being
implemented. We need to hear from the vendors.
