I think that all port connection type rules should be the same regardless on how the port connection was made (.name, .*, position or name). If the .name or .* is a convenience to write the port connection, why making it not possible for people to use the short cuts in the place where regular verilog port connections by name or position would have worked perfectly? What is the reason for adding these restrictions? In particular, disallowing the implicit casts but allowing the 2 state to 4 state implicit cast?
