It appears that there is text that tries to address the issues I mentioned with integral data types. It says "Similarly if more than one expected data type is possible, due to nested operators, and could match more than one function, a cast must be used to select the correct function." It is unclear exactly when this condition occurs, which is likely to create divergence among implementations. But a cast should always work.
