Proposal 2678 changes the meaning of a standard method in an unnecessary and incompatible way.
If a canonical escaped format display is needed, perhaps it should be added as a format specifier to $display() and $write()
Something like:

 Table 21-n--Format specifications for string data

Argument	Description
%s or %S	Display as a string
%n or %N	Display as an (escaped) identifier
