In Superlog, char and its synonym byte were added as C-compatible data types. They did not have a fixed size (could be any multiple of 8 bits) so that they could eventually support uni-code. The SystemVerilog committee removed char and made the byte type match a packed array of 8 bits. So byte has lost its significance as a distinct type. Adding a 4-state equivalent of byte would only serve to take up a new keyword at this point. Hi, Is there a reason that a 4-state equivalent of the byte data type was not defined in SystemVerilog?
