Brad, Even the sentence that you wrote is ambiguous, so to clarify: $root.A distingishes top-level instance A from other instances called A. But there can be more than one top-level instance. For example, if A and B are top-level modules, then they can be referenced as $root.A and $root.B, to distinguish them from other A's and B's.
