Alec,

I'm please to learn that Hoshino-san would like to follow the progress of
System Verilog. Kojima-san is currently the assigned representative from
JEITA to Accellera and I have copied him on this message.

I am sensitive to the ability of any standards organization to work in
such a manner that global participation in the development of a standard can
be achieved. As we hold teleconferences in the morning on the west coast of
the United States, I acknowledge we make it convenient for North American
and European participation and difficult for Japanese participation. There
are generally no good choices to solve this issue for teleconference
participation. We can all do the math and see how we can get close, but
someone is going to either be tired or just waking up.

In recognition of this, I do believe we can work with the chair of the
System Verilog technical committee, Vassilios Gerousis, to put in place
accredited membership in System Verilog for a Japanese representative. I
believe Hoshino-san should be added to the reflector. I believe that
Hoshino-san would have a responsibility to review the meeting agenda and
provide comments in context of the agenda to the reflector prior to the
meetings, review meeting minutes after the meeting and provide comments on
issues that were raised during the meetings. (And I think Vassilios and the
team should actually be the ones to set this participation criteria, so
these are just suggestions.) If this were to be the case, then I would
think Hoshino-san should be eligible for voting privileges in keeping with
the meeting requirements already established. And, for those in North
American and Europe, where teleconference meeting attendance is better
accommodated, no such privileges are allowed.

From time-to-time the committee may call face-to-face meetings. In this
case, I think the rules of the committee would need to be examined since we
would expect Hoshino-san to actually participate in person. Again, I think
this is for the team to decided.

In order to secure a greater understanding of the work that Accellera is
doing, I have asked Vassilios to work with Kojima-san to offer a workshop on
Accellera sponsored standards in Japan. We are working towards this now. I
believe Vassilios and Kojima-san have tentative times in the July time frame
to hold such an event.

In as much as Hoshino-san will be able to participate and contribute, we
are also looking to work with JEITA to share information on System Verilog
with the Japanese design community in general. We are doing this to ensure
a smooth acceptance of System Verilog in Japan. I think it is important to
work with you to follow-up on Hoshino-san's participation since it is
another facet to ensure this smooth acceptance.

-Dennis

Dennis,

Tamio Hoshino, from Applistar, Japan, is interested to follow the
progress we are making on System Verilog (I told him that SystemC is
doomed to oblivion!:-). He is a member of JEIDA, which
participates in the IEEE standardization of Verilog. Tamio will
most likely become one of Japan's representatives to the IEC TC-93
Committee. He was for many years reviewer of papers at DAC, and was
a key contributor to the UDL/I standardization effort.

Due to the time at which our meetings take place it is
difficult for him to attend our phone conferences (they take place
between 1am and 3am his time).

In order to prepare a smooth acceptance of System Verilog in Japan as
well, I propose to put Tamio on our reflector, and provide him with a
draft of the proposed LRM. As he probably cannot attend sufficient
meetings he will not have voting rights. This way he could act as a
lieson to JEIDA and make presentations about our activities in Japan.

Please let me know what I should tell him.

Best regards,

Alec Stanculescu
